What is four-way stretch fabric?

Four-way stretch fabric is a stretchable fabric that stretches in both the warp and weft directions. Stretching easily both horizontally and vertically, it offers the wearer freedom of movement. This property of the fabric is mechanically or structurally enhanced and can be stretched in two ways.

What is 4-way stretch fabric?

4-way stretch can be made from woven or knitted construction. In the weave, it has spandex on the wrap and weft. In knitted fabrics, blended yarns are used to produce four-way stretch fabrics. Basically, four-way stretch fabrics are made from elastane fibers such as spandex, lycra, or other blends of elastane.

Types of 4-way stretch fabrics

Four-way elastic cloth can be divided into the following types according to the composition:

polyester spandex

Polyester fabrics are not stretchy at all. But today, most stretch fabrics are made from polyester. Polyester can be turned into a stretch fabric by blending spandex fibers with polyester fibers where 90-92% polyester and 8-10% spandex fiber composition is used in the structure.

cotton spandex

Like polyester, woven cotton doesn't have much natural stretch at all. It is blended with spandex to create the elasticity of the fabric, where 95% cotton and 5% spandex are used to produce cotton spandex.

100% spandex

Elastane: Spandex or Lycra is essential in producing stretch fabrics. Sometimes 100% spandex is used to make super stretchy fabrics. This is not something you use for regular clothing. 100% spandex is mainly used in the production of swimwear, biker suits and other sportswear.

Nylon spandex

Nylon is not elastic at all. But it's super durable. Nylon spandex fabric is great for adding flexibility and strength to garments. Nylon spandex is made of 50% nylon and 50% spandex. It is used in swimwear, dance wear, costumes and other types of sportswear.

Rayon Spandex

Rayon is a recycled fiber. This can be done by adding spandex to the fabric structure to produce stretch fabrics, where 95% rayon and 5% spandex are used to make rayon spandex. It is used in very breathable clothing.

Stretch cotton poplin

Stretch cotton poplin fabric is poplin, which originates from a woven fabric usually made of cotton. It is made elastic by adding elastic fibers in the warp or weft direction.

It's made of 97% cotton and 3% spandex. Stretch cotton poplin is soft and lightweight, perfect for activewear like dance dresses.

Cotton jersey is very stretchy yet soft. It is prevalent in low maintenance fabrics. It does not wrinkle easily. It is ideal for the production of dresses, T-shirts and even home textiles such as bed sheets.

stretch satin

Satin is usually not stretchy. Because it is made of synthetic fibers like polyester. Therefore, stretch satin fabric is generally made of nylon and spandex, which makes it a mechanical four-way stretch fabric.
