How to distinguish warp knitted and weft knitted fabrics?

Knitted fabrics are made up of loops that are connected in series. According to different knitting methods, they can be divided into two categories: weft-knitted fabric and warp-knitted fabric. Weft knitted fabrics are woven by large circular knitting machines by warp tuck and loop forming, and warp knitting is woven by flat knitting machines.

Weft knitted fabrics, such as normal sportswear, underwear, socks, and hand-knit sweaters, are all knitted with weft yarns to form loops. In warp knitting, all the knitting needles are placed into loops at the same time.

Compared with weft knitted fabrics, knitted fabrics generally have lower extensibility. Most weft knitted fabrics have significant extensibility in the transverse direction. The extensibility of warp knitted fabrics is related to the number of combs and the organization. Some warp knitted fabrics have both horizontal and vertical extensibility, but some fabrics have good dimensional stability.

Multiple yarns for warp knitting are formed into loops in sequence along the longitudinal direction (warp direction) of the fabric at the same time.

Weft knitting uses one or more yarns to form a loop along the transverse direction (weft) of the department.

Weft-knitted knitwear can be formed with at least one yarn, but in order to improve production efficiency, multiple yarns are generally used for knitting;

However, warp knitted fabrics cannot be formed with one yarn, and one yarn can only form a lion-like object composed of one loop.

All weft-knitted fabrics can be broken into threads in the opposite knitting direction, but warp-knitted fabrics cannot.

The simplest and most intuitive way to distinguish is to observe, the front and back textures are the same in weft knitting, and the vertical ones are warp knitting. Basically, weft knitting is divided into plain weave, rib weave and double-sided. Warp knitting is divided into warp flat, warp chain, warp satin and warp velvet. Moreover, the warp knitting cannot be separated, and the weft knitting can be separated in the weft direction.

The simplest method is: the warp-knitted loops cannot be opened, and the weft-knitted loops can be pulled apart. As long as you pull the loop, you will know whether it is warp-knitted or weft-knitted. You only need to pull the two pieces of cloth in the horizontal direction (warp direction) with your hands. The warp-knitted cloth cannot be pulled, but the weft-knitted cloth has obvious elasticity.
