Difference Between Handloomed Linen and Machine Woven Linen

Artisans often produce handwoven linens by incorporating their manual talents into handloom techniques on handlooms. In contrast, machine-made linen is produced through machine-integrated automation. Here are the essential differences between the two:

Texture: During hand weaving, the density of the weaving threads and reed will determine the texture and weight of the garment. Machine weaving will produce an even grain, while the hand weaving process can create thin or thick grains depending on the looming style.

Uniformity: Woven linens have a uniform texture throughout, while handwoven linens have a unique texture. The art of handcrafting infuses uniqueness into each garment. For example, no two handmade linen scarves will be exactly the same. Because the spigots of the loom are operated by artisans rather than machines, the loom produces the fall and character of the fabric, making a fabric unique every time.

Increased Weaving Complexity: Even weaving flax fibers on a machine is a complicated and slow process (compared to cotton) because the fibers break easily. The same problem was compounded when flax fibers were woven on handlooms.

Sustainability: When it comes to sustainability, there is no comparison to the hand weaving method. Likewise, handmade scarves and other sets made from linen are more environmentally conscious. The traditional linen weaving process produces less waste and pollution and thus benefits the ecosystem.

Ease of Personalization: Since artisans individually weave each linen garment or accessory, it is easier to customize to suit different fashion senses and choices. However, it is not so easy for the machine-made ones since the same garments are being made.
