The original "jacquard" mechanism involved the use of thousands of punched cards bundled together. Each row of punches corresponds to a row of textile patterns, allowing for more efficient creation of complex weaving patterns.
During the fabric weaving process, jacquard fabric is created by passing weft (horizontal) threads of different colors over and under warp (vertical) threads, creating an intricate design with a tapestry-like finish.
Today's jacquard fabrics are made on computerized jacquard looms, which can create countless highly complex patterns. Electronic Jacquard looms have thousands of hooks shuttled through different yarns, allowing them to weave large pieces of fabric quickly and efficiently.
