What is tie dye?

Tie-dyed cloth is a folk dyed fabric with a long history in my country. Before the fabric is dyed, tie tightly with thread at different parts according to the design requirements, and then loosen the tie to obtain a natural halo pattern. Tie-dyed cloth and batik cloth are originally only a blue and white variety. Now it has developed into a variety of colors, and the fabric has also developed from a single cotton cloth to silk, synthetic fiber and various blended fabrics.

Tie-dye tools have also developed from simple ties to various special tools. The current tie-dye fabric has developed from the clothing of rural women to fashion fabrics.

Tie-dyeing generally requires three steps: pre-dyeing, tie-dyeing, and post-dyeing.

Pre-dyeing

　　 In order to ensure uniform dyeing during the tie-dyeing process, the fabric needs to be treated before dyeing. Because the fabric often contains sizing agents, auxiliaries and certain natural impurities.

　　The pre-dyeing treatments include:

　　 Desizing: The purpose is to remove the sizing agent, and the cloth can be desizing by boiling the cloth with lye, oxidant or amylase and other agents.

　　Dosage: The medicine is 3% of the cloth weight, and the water is about 30 times the cloth weight.

　　 Refining: The purpose is to remove natural impurities and residual slurry on the fiber, and it is boiled with caustic soda and water. Dosage: Caustic soda is 3% of cloth weight, and water is about 30 times of cloth weight.

　　 Bleaching: Used to remove pigments and residual impurities, usually sodium hypochlorite or hydrogen oxide is boiled in water. Dosage: The bleaching agent is 3% of the cloth weight, and the water is about 30 times the cloth weight. In addition, the pre-dyeing treatment of silk is refined with soap, sodium carbonate and water.

　　Ironing for use: Use an electric iron to iron the rinsed cloth for drawing patterns and binding.

　　Tie-dyeing

　　The designed pattern is marked on the cloth with paint powder or traced with paint liquid, and then the cloth is tied or stitched. After completion, soak it in water and let it soak, take it out and let it dry. After it is not dripping, put it into the prepared dyeing solution or dip or boil it for a certain period of time, then rinse with water and dry.

　　 Post-dyeing

　　 After drying the bundle, you can untie the knot when it is not completely dry, and iron it with an iron while it is wet to finish.
